Atelier is a letterpress printing and calligraphy studio owned and run by Terri Anderson. Why Atelier? We are passionate and knowledgeable. We are small - so you deal with one person from start to finish. We care about a quality product. We advise - if it won't work we will tell you, and then we will help find a solution. We are also open to feedback. We take pride in what we do - so know you understand such a hands on printing process is going to cost a bit more - but you also know the results will be well worth it!
Atelier has evolved and grown over a period of twenty years. Letterpress, calligraphy and papermaking are all centuries old crafts and in many ways an organic fit with each other. My passion for all three comes together at Atelier; and my work strives to reflect careful hand crafting, attention to detail and an eye for simple yet effective design. Having always drawn and painted my real passion for lettering and calligraphy began in 1990 after commencing a hobby course. Encouraged by winning the Australian Society of Calligraphers scholarship I decided to complete the Diploma in Western Calligraphy and set up my own studio - Design Calligraphy.
It was a natural progression for me to explore printing methods and papers. Letterpress sparked my interest - steeped in history, hands on and producing such wonderful rich tactile results. Typography was never far from the scene - an appreciation for the construction of type based on calligraphic letters and principles and the beauty of many type faces. Several years of learning and the good fortune of being mentored by 'old hands' - pressmen and compositors with over 70 years combined experience, and the find of a 50 year old press in wonderful working order - led to the launch of Atelier and the merge with Design Calligraphy.
The history of type, printing and calligraphy ar intertwined. The first moveable type letters were based upon calligraphic scripts: circa 1447 Gutenberg mechanised printing by using letters cast in an alloy of lead, inked and then pressed onto paper in the first letter press. The process had an incalculable effect on European culture, and gradually books and publications printed by letterpress not only replaced those produced by scribes; but also allowed printed matter to be available to all, not just the wealthy. Lettering pre dates the press by many centuries. I draw upon both ancient and contemporary scripts and employ different mediums and materials for my calligraphic and letterpress work.
Ever thirsty for knowledge and experience I have attended many workshops of esteemed international calligraphers, grown my portfolio, shown in galleries and completed commissions for many individual, business and institutional clients both in Australia and overseas. |
